How much money do you need to raise to run a marathon?

Hi, I watched the London Marathon yesterday and I have decided that I would really like to do a marathon next year. Does anyone know how much money you need to raise to run a marathon? Is it thousands of pounds? Or is there no limit at all?|||Most marathons are entered by paying the entry fee (from ~10 to 100 pounds depending on the race), and then you turn up and race (of course after a lot of training and all that).

Some of the larger marathons, like London, are very popular and entry to them is through a first come first served basis or through a ballot - if you are lucky then they tell you, you pay your money and you're in. These very popular marathons tend to give places to charities and this is what you are talking about - raising money. If you don't get a place with the normal entry route or ballot (or even if you didn't try to get a place that way) then you can sign up with a charity. They enter you for the race and pay all the fees and for that entry you plegde to raise som emoney for them. You do the run and give them the money and everyone is happy. Some runs, like the Great North Run (half marathon - 13.1 miles) they charities are tending to ask for about 500, where as the London Marathon I believe they ask for a thousand or more.

There are other UK marathons happening all the time and these are listed on websites such as Runnersworld, runningfitness or UKresults Some of these have much nicer routes than London as well (OK I don;t like London and the thought of 5 or 6 miles running through Greenwich doens't appeal).

If you want to run for a charity then pick one that suites and check their website to see which runs they are putting a team into

To give you a short answer - You don't need to raise money for a charity for a marathon place though for the larger ones such as London then you have to be a bit lucky to get a place through the ballot and a charity place might be the way to go.
