How long might it take me to train for a 13 mile marathon. Complete beginner?

I don't have any exercise regimen and my endurance is very low. I have taken on the marathon challenge for 13 miles. How long would it take to train approximately? ANY training tips you give will be highly appreciated. Never ran a marathon before. Thanks guys!

PS: Also, is a marathon supposed to be like a jog? Or a run? Not sure what applies.|||Ok first thing you need to know is that a marathon is not 13 miles but 26.2 miles. It sounds like you are doing a 1/2 marathon which is still respectable. It takes 32 weeks to train properly for a full marathon so a 1/2 marathon would be 16 weeks. So find a 1/2 marathon you want to do and working backwards starting with the race count from 13 to 1. That leaves you 3 weeks of discipline training. You start off for 3 weeks to run every other day just a mile beginning with week for you can add a mile one day a week. These are usually done on Sunday since Sunday is the day most races are held although some can be on Saturday. This will allow you to build a base of miles and increase your endurance slow enough so as not to get injured. By then end of the 7th week you should be at 7 miles, than you run 8, 10, 5, 12, 6, 1/2 marathon in the weekends that follow.|||good advice above, i would only add that you will want to join an online running forum to keep you motivated, i dont push one over the other, here are 3

runnersworld.com forum- pretty big, not very personal

coolrunning.com forum, pretty good

runnersrule.com forum- smaller a little more personal.

the reason you will want to join a forum is for support, your friends and family are not going to "get" why you are doing this. it important to have encouragement, if your not getting from friends or family you will get it online, plus there are a lot helpful people in these forums if you have any other question, which you will when you start
